PROSPER produces many benefits; for the families
and youth who participate, and for their communities.
Youth learn skills to deal with the stresses and pressures
of school and peer relations. Families become closer and
learn to work together. Communities come together to
make it all happen.
In addition
to the benefits for those involved with
PROSPER, everyone benefits by reduced costs to society
from substance abuse and problem behaviors. Prevention
of alcohol disorders alone saves more money than many
people might realize. It has been estimated that 148
billion dollars are lost each year in the U.S. due to alcohol
disorders (Harwood et al., 1999). By preventing a
single alcohol disorder, PROSPER saves roughly
$119,000 over the life of the potentially alcohol
disordered individual. This is not to mention lives
saved from alcohol-related accidents, violent crimes
prevented, and better quality of life for the individual
and those close to them. (Spoth, Guyll, and Day, 2002)
