One of the highlights of the 2009 PROSPER Statewide Meeting was the first-annual presentation of the Harkin PROSPER Award. Senator Tom Harkin has been a champion of wellness and health promotion for many years. As a strong proponent of putting science into practice to improve quality of life for Iowans, and emphasizing prevention over treatment, Senator Harkin has, in the words of PPSI Director Richard Spoth, “made significant contributions to the PROSPER cause—realizing the PROSPER vision to improve the health and well-being of our families and youth, through scientifically proven programming.”
While the Senator was unable to attend the presentation, his assistant John Moreland was on hand to receive the award in his honor. A plaque was presented with the inscription:
“In appreciation for your commitment to improving education and creating greater access to health services for youth and families in Iowa we present the inaugural Harkin PROSPER award recognizing the advancement of putting prevention science into practice in Iowa communities.”

Mr. Moreland conveyed Senator Harkin’s greetings and appreciation. Among other comments, he said “The capacity of the Cooperative Extension System and the public school infrastructure greatly assists in the delivery of scientifically proven programs. We celebrate with you today the success of the PROSPER model for effective delivery of these proven programs to our communities.”
The Harkin PROSPER Award recognizes an individual or a small group of people who have made significant contributions toward the advancement of prevention science to practice in Iowa communities. As PROSPER develops a national network of partnerships and expands to more sites inside Iowa and beyond, this recognition will carry the message of scientifically-proven prevention practice and wellness into the future, throughout our nation.
