PROSPER is a cooperative project of Iowa State University and
Penn State University. Researchers at these institutions are investigating
ways to build networks with schools, state extension services,
universities, and community members who care, to provide life-skills-
enhancing training for youth and families. See Goals
PROSPER employs training programs that have been scientifically
evaluated and shown to reduce teen problem behaviors like smoking,
drinking, and drug use. These programs have been evaluated by researchers
at the Prevention Research Center at Pennsylvania State University, and at
the Partnerships in Prevention Science Institute at Iowa State University,
and by researchers at other institutions, and shown to be very effective in
reducing problem behaviors. See Design
PROSPER began in February of 2002 and will continue until 2007.
Thousands of middle-school youth and their families have participated in
training that improves their social skills and decision-making, helps them
to cope with anxiety, and informs them about the consequences
of substance abuse. The training also strengthens families by helping
parents to interact with their children more effectively, and by helping
youth to be more integrated into their families. See Benefits
PROSPER is paving the way for a whole new system to put
scientifically designed and proven programs into action to
improve the quality of life for youth and families. See Highlights
